Slater Road/Jordan Creek Fish Passage

Slater Road is an important arterial and freight corridor serving area petroleum refineries northwest of Bellingham. The Jordan Creek culvert crossing Slater Road had deteriorated to the point that an in-place repair was not feasible. Furthermore, the culvert was a barrier to fish passage.

TranTech designed a permanent replacement for the 190-foot long culvert to allow fish passage while maintaining function of this important freight route. A Type, Size, & Location (TS&L) Report was prepared generating three viable replacement options: two culverts and one bridge alternative. Whatcom County, with the support of the Lummi Nation, chose a 142-foot long prestressed concrete bridge concept. Construction was completed in 2017.
