Broadway Bridge Replacement

TranTech was the prime consultant for this federally funded bridge replacement project. The original Broadway Bridge was 100 feet long and 100 feet wide, carrying five lanes of traffic and two sidewalks over the BNSF railroad main line and a Sound Transit rail line. The original steel-frame bridge had deteriorated significantly and had a limited functional service life. It was required that the BNSF and Sound Transit railway lines to remain operable throughout construction. The Broadway Bridge is located in the heart of Everett’s central business district, making aesthetic considerations an important decision parameter.

TranTech team prepared Type, Size, & Location Report for the project wherein a three span precast concrete was recommended for the replacement bridge. Following City’s approval of the recommended alternative, TranTech’s team advanced the three-span bridge concept to full design status. The new bridge superstructure is composed of precast slabs with cast-in-place deck for quick construction within BNSF ROW and its substructure is composed of 4-foot drilled shafts and 30” columns. The shallow superstructure has improved the existing roadway clearance over the BNSF tracks. The bridge project was selected as the Best Transportation Project of 2015 by KIRO. The project has also won 2018 APWA Project of the Year l 2017 ACEC National Silver Medal Award l IEC Merit Award for Illumination.
